Hello 2020!

…And – we’re back! Rehearsals start again on Tuesday 7th January.

Spring term promises to be an exciting one, especially since it’s the 20’s again… Have a peek at the calendar page to find out a tiny bit more about our plans for this term…!

Goodbye 2019…

Thanks for a fantastic end to the year everyone! After our successful ‘Cabaret in the Crypt’ night, our last gig of the year was a carol-singing pub crawl. Carols ’round Camberwell began at the gnarled tree in Camberwell Churchyard and it was a bit dark and damp to start with…

…but we soon made our way to the pubs of Camberwell, singing and raising money for charity Shine. Thanks to everyone who donated and supported us. Until next year!

Good cheer in the crypt

November saw a return for our ‘cabaret in the crypt night’ which seems to have taken on a status as legendary as our ‘cheese and wine’ rehearsals.

Whilst a church crypt is not everyone’s ideal venue when it comes to cabaret, our choir seems to have embraced it as a second home and it’s only fitting really, given that our very first choir rehearsals took place there, all the way back in 2011.

Choir renditions of ‘Moon River’, ‘Over the rainbow’, ‘Movin on up’, ‘Hallelujah’ and ‘Goodnight Sweetheart’ sounded fabulous. And in-between the choir items, we had some fantastic solo performances. The ‘John/Dom/Lucy’ trio excelled themselves, as did Winston and Sheila in the first half. The ‘Monday Quintet’, named just a few minutes before they took to the stage, performed some foot-tapping folk music. Louisa and Gargie sang beautifully moving songs and John and Dominic returned to the stage to end the second half. The choir finished things off with encores of ‘Fix you’ and ‘Goodnight Sweetheart’.

Do come and join us for more crypt goings on next year!

Camberwell Groove

Thursday 10th of October is World Mental Health Day and we’re delighted to be taking part in a concert at Theatre Peckham to help promote knowledge and understanding around mental health issues in our local community.

GrooveWe’re teaming up with the Mind & Soul choir, who are based at the Maudsley Hospital and we’ll be taking part in a joint workshop on the day. In the evening we’ll be singing together and performing a premier of a song by Aga!

It will be a really special occasion so please do bring along friends and family. Tickets are available to buy online here.

An early start back!

We’re starting back early this term as we have a lot to prepare and look forward to!

With performances at Camberwell Fair and Theatre Peckham as well as ‘Cabaret in the Crypt’ it’s going to be an action-packed term!

Check out the calendar on the tab above or our Facebook page for the very latest details.

Choir’s out for summer

We hope that you’ve enjoyed choir this term – we’ve sung at various concerts and at a moving service for the 10th anniversary of the Lakanal House fire. We’ve also had fun at cheese and wine night and we’ve already started work for next term, which promises to be a busy one!

Before we get there, we’re going to be performing on stage at Cameberwell Fair on Saturday 31st of August! Check out the calendar for details about a rehearsal the week before and we hope to see you there on the day.

Wishing you all a great summer in the meantime!

Sounds of summer

Usually, the choir learns music throughout a term and performs it a few months later at the end of said term. But we like challenges. And what better to stretch ourselves than learn some new music – with lots of new choir members – and perform it all just three rehearsals later?

In the surroundings of the gothic architecture of St Giles’ Church, we kicked off the church summer series of concerts with a sublimely diverse range of music from composers such as Billy Joel and Mozart. Matt and Ashley performed solos and it was a fantastic evening with celebratory pints and pizza at the end.

The choir is on half term on the 28th of May but we are back to normal from Tuesday 4th of June. Needless to say, we’ll still have plenty to work on and you can look forward to playing your part to help Camberwell come alive with the sounds of summer.

Tales from the ‘Cambaret’ Crypt

Thanks to everyone who worked so hard preparing for our two gigs – a joint choir concert in Waterloo and our ‘Cambaret’ in the crypt night.

IMG_4277_2We’ve performed above ground at St Giles’ Church many times – but the last time we were in St Giles’ Crypt was in 2011 when the choir first started rehearsing. Attendance averaged around five people on a Tuesday night back then – how times have changed! For this gig, there was standing room only for our audience – but no one seemed to mind. The acoustics down there suit a choir so well and as for our solo and group acts – what an amazing sound. From folk bands to Elvis to opera singers – our choir contains so many varied and talented musicians, some of whom were performing for the first time in their lives. There will be more cabaret nights to come!

After a fabulous wine and cheese night, we ended term by joining with some of our other local choirs in Waterloo for a joint choir concert. It’s always fun seeing what other choirs are up to and it was a great way to end our term.

Summer term starts on Tuesday 30th of April and we are already putting gigs in the diary. Have a wonderful holiday and see you for more music-making at choir soon!

Thanks for a great term!

As usual, Carols ’round Camberwell provided much festive cheer whilst raising money for Crisis, the homeless charity. Thanks to everyone who braved the rain and joined in the fun afterwards at the Joiner’s Arms!

See you in 2019 and in the meantime – Matt, Aga and Ashley wish you a very

Merry Christmas!
